We tend to think of flood insurance in coastal areas because of the severe tropical storms of the last few years. Of course, flood insurance is a very real need to protect homes and business against flood damage. Most home insurance policies do not cover flood insurance, and it must be purchased as another policy.
Flood insurance may purchased privately in some locations, but in high risk areas, you may need to purchase from the FEMA national flood insurance program.
Flood damage happens in all 50 states, and may be responsible for 90% of storm damage, according to the National Flood Insurance program.
